We want voice chat in Marathon to be a safe and respectful space for all our players. To help us support that initiative, we have rolled out voice moderation tools for in-game voice chat.
These tools will help us identify and address behavior that may violate our Community Standards and Codes of Conduct. For more information, please see below.
What is Voice Moderation?
Voice moderation is a feature that helps detect and review reports of behavior that may violate our policies when using in-game voice chat. Our moderation tools will apply to Crew Chat, Proximity Chat, and any future voice chats we may introduce.
For more information about our rules and enforcement policies, see our Community Code of Conduct.
How do I report someone for violating the Code of Conduct?
Please follow the steps found in our Reporting Poor Runner Behavior article to report a violation by another player.
Is there a guide on what I can and cannot say?
In general, we expect players to respect each other, even in the heat of battle. For that reason, please review our Community Code of Conduct and Expanded Definitions article for information on the types of communications we do not tolerate.
What are the consequences of being moderated?
If a potential violation is detected, enforcement actions may be taken on a player's account in accordance with our policies. Voice chat enforcement actions can include voice chat restrictions, voice and text chat restrictions, and account-level restrictions.
Can I really not trash talk and cut up with my friends?
We know that our games can get competitive and interactions with others can get heated. We understand that a little trash talk is expected in our games – it’s banter or bragging that focuses on the game and encourages competition – and that’s not a bad thing.
But what is a bad thing is when trash talk turns into harassing, demeaning, marginalizing, using hateful language against, or belittling other players or groups, even if your Crew Chat is private.
As we explain in our Community Standards: People enjoy all shapes and styles of content in Bungie’s games. Everyone’s tastes are different, and that’s great! However, that doesn’t mean that absolutely anything goes. To keep the game and our social communities welcoming and inclusive for everyone, some content must be avoided or removed.
Can I customize my voice chat settings?
Yes, players can customize their voice chat settings depending on what permissions they have available.
Young Players
Players not considered adults in their country will automatically have voice and text chat turned to "Off" when they play Marathon. This setting and other voice chat settings cannot be turned "On" without permission from a parent, guardian, or responsible adult.
Parents who want to grant their child access to voice and text chat can do so by setting up Parental Controls.
For an overview of Parental Controls, please view our Date of Birth Requirements for Bungie Platforms and Services article.
To grant permissions to your child's account, visit www.bungie.net/permissions to set up and link your Bungie.net Account with their own. If you don't yet have a Bungie.net Account, visit our Bungie.net Profile: Account Creation and Linking Guide to create one.

- Select "Settings"
- Select "Social"
- Locate the "Voice Chat" heading.
- Choose what settings to customize.
How is my voice data used?
When your voice chat setting is "On," your voice audio may be analyzed and temporarily recorded to support moderation and enforcement activities so potential Code of Conduct violations can be reviewed and addressed appropriately.
For more information about how Bungie processes personal information, please see our Privacy Policy.
How long will Bungie have access to my voice data?
We try to keep your voice audio data for as little time as possible while we review potential violations. While a transcript is helpful, they aren't perfect, and we want to ensure that players who haven't violated our policies aren't subject to an enforcement action. After 35 days, the audio is automatically deleted from our systems as a preemptive measure.
If a violation is discovered during review, we will retain the transcript of the offence and associated metadata for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in our Privacy Policy, but not the audio itself. However, Bungie may be required to retain an audio clip to comply with legal obligations. If this occurs, the audio will be retained for as long as we are legally required to hold it.
How can I appeal a restriction that I don't agree with?
If you received an enforcement action and believe it was applied incorrectly, you may submit an appeal in our Bungie Game Account Restrictions and Banning Policies article.
For more information about our rules and enforcement policies, see our Code of Conduct.
